MISSION
Our mission is to contribute to student achievement and lifelong learning by providing a representative collection of books and various resources that can be used to support the curriculum in partnership or in collaboration with classroom teachers. As well as insuring that the media center (Shark Central) is accessible to teachers of all subject areas and is available to all students as an extension of the classroom to further their educational experience and learning while at Atlantic High School.

BOOK SELECTION PROCESS
Books selected for our collection meet with the following criteria: Reviewed by reputable resources; high interest; should reflect our student demographics, (e.g., Incoming freshmen, upper-classmen as they prepare to become contributing citizens, socioeconomics, cultures, levels of readership, and the community--as a whole). We conduct an annual inventory, weed books, and attempt to replace books on an annual basis to meet both the needs of teachers, curriculum, topics of interest for research and/or reading.
Fiction books in general are not assigned, they are chosen by students based on interest and the various genres. The stories within them may not always appeal to the individual, but it is our responsibility that each and every student has the opportunity to see themselves (inclusive) and the opportunity to see others (diverse) in an effort to better understand each other. Finally, it is also our responsibility to provide a collection of non-fiction books in a variety of formats that students can refer to when researching our global and American history; or any aspect of society past or present. The collection should have enough of these resources that allow our students to engage as critical thinkers and problem solvers. To do this with fidelity, one can not be beholden to one perspective or view. Our best practice support Intellectual Freedom and a Growth Mindset. Encouraging students to read, learn, know, and grow to their fullest potential.
Students and parents have access to our collection via Follett Destiny. Should you encounter a title that you feel is not suitable for your child, simply request that a note be placed in the system on behalf of your child. This will ensure that your child is cared for and the rights of all other parents and their children (students) are also preserved.
